My understanding is that regardless of your perspective in 3D, your Moho objects will be sorted in Z-depth based on their layer position.

Is your flat plane over the black one in your layers menu?

Yup, that's exactly what it was. As a force of habit (coming from the games industry) I was keying a transparency colour when I should have just left the background empty. As soon as I deleted the keying everything rendered fine. Arggh, now I have to go export all of those character pieces again :( ...
