Thank you for the help. I found that it may be easier to do most of the fading through keynote rather than anime.

fade up and down
I just noticed that if I put the opacity at 100 reducing to 0, the text shows (but doesn't change) in the rendering. But if I do the reverse - begin at 0 and increase to 100, no text shows up.
