Would i have to do this after i make the whole thing a shape or as i add points, also what's grid snap?

I have AS5 (not pro) and I want to make a stick man's body segments look like popsicle sticks with curved ends, but i don't know how i could be able to make the shape symmetrical. Any help would be great, thanks!
