ctrl-c, x, v all work "as expected" on things such as keyframes, points, bones etc. It's only when you get to "big things" (layers!) that you need the edit menu! [Copy/paste layer is Pro only BTW]

open both moho files.
in the "old" one - select the layer (switch group if I read your post correctly) that you want to copy then Edit > Copy Layer
in the "new" one - select the layer BELOW where you want the copied layer to end up then Edit > Paste Layer

first place I'd look is the custom tools you have installed. There have been instances where people using some older Mynd tools have reported crashes using them. But there may be other reasons.
