my first "3D" shot

Post by eric1223 »

Right here is my first 3D shot of my WIP The Ageless. I know I said I wasnt going to post anymore about this till I was done, but I was wrong . I ran into a couple of problems making it because AS could not render a particular angle, so I found a work around it.

Anyway, here's the thing.

Definitely looks 3D. When the camera first moves around the building, I thought a dinosaur of some sort was back there. I guess it's actually a tree though  There's also some major sliding on the character's walk cycle. Looks good for a test though, make no mistake.

Thanks for the input Danimal. That tree was supposed to have a inflate 3D effect as too, but something kept going wrong with the style (the tree trunk kept taking the leaves color).

Do you have any tips to avoid the sliding? Believe it or not, there was much much much (can't emphasize enough) sliding going on, as if she was at a skate ring on the moon. I tried either speeding up the walk cycle, or shorting the distance she walked. Is there anything else I can try?

Trust me on this, I'm the last person to help with this. Every character I've ever made walk slid around like ice skating after first applying 12 cans of WD40 to their blades. I eventually just learned to cut the shots off at the knee, haha.

Selgin posted a walk ruler a while back and it really works wonders. You can find it here:

Also, with version 10 there is the Target bone system which pretty well locks the feet in place if set up right.

Aww come on, don't sell yourself short! Even if u have a hard time with the slideing, u are still able to point it out. With enough exp, u'll get it...just like I believe I can. And besides, you helped alot. that video helped. :) So thanks alot!

I do my walk cycles FBF if I get to much sliding.
tips
Make sure you have the translation set to linear.
Make sure both feet/legs have the same stride.
Make sure both feet/legs have the same amount of distance on the time line.
Sorry for bad animation

Agree with all tips here, Esp. linear translation.

I've gone so far as to just throw whatever I have set up for a character into a another group-layer that I can translate independently.

FBF and/or at least onion-skinning to line up planted steps is useful. "Linear" is important though, because otherwise each additional keyframe you adjust is slightly relative to another.

(Honestly haven't worked that much with target bones in AS10 because I'm mid-project and I tended to get accidental angle pops with that method more than was worth my time right now.)

But walk-sliding is an ongoing topic here. I think someone should put together a montage... or maybe we just create a new project, "Anime Studio on Ice" where all those test walk cycles can be compiled. Maybe to the G-Love and Special Sauce song "Walk to Slide"

...

Anyone? Anyone?

Here is very painful way to do a walk cycle in AS, I prefer to do it this way even in AS 9. It isn't that bad after you get used to doing it.

A fix for the sliding that works for me is to add some pause layer points for a frame or two mid-walk before allowing the character to continue on their "slide" walk, so if you have the bone movements in a walking cycle and you simply start your character at point A at the beginning walk frame, and move them to point B at the stop point, I try to break it up subtly with pause or shift points by creating a layer key frame here and there. Often time as well, the walk cycle is animated too slowly and needs to be sped up to catch up with the linear layer points, this is why pausing the layer "slide" movement can help.

Hope this makes sense

Alright. I've tried most of every suggestion posted so far, and this is what I came up with. Thanks for for the help :)

It's not perfect, But I think its a slight improvement of what I had before.

Excellent 3D! As Danimal has suggested study Selgin to learn walk cycles. I would also suggest "Onion skins". It will help when you want to keep a foot in the same spot until your character moves it again. Remember that you need both 'start' and 'stop' keys if you want to control that 'drifting' effect. Copy / Paste :)
