Referenced Switch Layers

Post by mkelley »

Okay, so obviously I don't understand how references work in AS but am I wrong in assuming they don't work like any other program I've ever used references in?

In any other program, if you change what is being referenced inside of that program (forget outside for a minute -- that seems to work) the references inside update correctly. IOW, if you have a sphere and reference it, and then alter that sphere (make it a box) the reference will also alter. Which is the point of references.

If AS is supposed to work that way, it sure doesn't when it comes to switch layers. If I reference a switch layer and then change the switch in the original the switch will NOT change in the reference -- which kind of removes the whole point of having them.

Or am I just doing something wrong? (You sure shouldn't have to do much more than this to get it to work correctly -- I shouldn't have to "update" anything or cause references to be updated when I'm inside the program that has the original referenced object).

I just tried and it works as expected.
I created a switch layers with 3 layers inside (circle, rectangle and star). Then created a reference from it.
When I switch the original from circle to rectangle, the reference also changes. If I move the points to the rectangle, the reference also moves the points.

The only way to lost the connection between original and reference is to animate the switch channel on the reference. Once you do that, the software loses the connection for that specific channel. If you want that back, you need to right click the channel on the reference and "Sync channel to original".

Ah, but the ability to sync the animation is *exactly* what is needed (again, that's the point of references).

Having to click on the channel to update it each time is not acceptable. There needs to be a setting to always keep it in sync. Again, this is unlike any other animation program I have ever used.

Wait -- are you saying animating the "reference" breaks the connection? Sorry, I missed that (this is an edit but as a general rule I don't believe in changing replies in case anyone is following along). Okay, so perhaps I accidentally did that and did break the connection. I need to go back and see.

Thanks for replying.

Hehe, without erasing the first part, that post felt as reading your mind. I'm happy it makes sense for you now :)
