Independent Object

Hello, i'm a former flash user, but still then i was not quite familiar with technical terms, so maybe there is a word about which i don't know for what i'm trying to say here. The closest to a self-explanatory term i found is "independent object". What i mean by that is an object that has its own animation working in parallel with all the rest. In flash i used to create an object and that would open exclusive frames for it, where i could do whatever i wanted and it would loop independent from what happened out of it. To make things easier to understand, since english is not my first language and i don't know how clear i am being here, let's say i want a fan, rotating endlessly. The characters are doing stuff in the scene and the fan is on there, but i do not want to have to set key frames all over the animation for the fan to rotate, when i can do it in a much simplier way, and i'm pretty sure i am, but i don't know how. Although it is a pretty beginner's question, i couldn't find an answer to that because i didn't know the technical term to it, as i have mentioned before. So i came here to see if somebody would enlight me. Thanks a lot.

A rotating fan would be made with a cycle. Just 2 keyframes, the last one set to cycle. See manual.
