Bone Dynamics - position offset

Post by ExplodeCreative »

Hey all,

I'm looking for a way for a bone to follow another bone's position, but at an offset. Bone dynamics only seems to affect rotation. Position control bone tickbox almost does the trick, but the child bone moves around in strange directions instead of following the parent's global position.

Basically, I'm trying to cheat a 3D parallax wobble effect by binding different points on a mesh to different bones moving at different offsets.

Any ideas?

Just use a position control bone, but not parented. The parenting is trying to add to the motion of the constraint.

With that, the bone follows the other bone exactly. I'm looking to add a timing offset. Like valueAtTime in After Effects, or a dynamics wiggle to the position.

If you set the constraint to more or less than one, it will not move exactly with the control bone.

If you really need something like AE's valueAtTime, the easiest way would be to animate one bone first, copy/paste it, and offset the pasted bone keyframes.
Or you could use two separate bone layers following the same Follow Path, with the keyframes offset.

Ok thanks for your help Synthsin. Was hoping there was a more automated way of doing this with dynamics/ position control, but can settle for that if that's how it goes.

You could automate it, but once again, you'd need two bone layers. Just have the following bone be a reference if the leading bone layer and offset the following layer in the Sequencer.
