How to move other bones with Smart Bone

Post by animas3D »

Hello,

I would like to move various bones in my rig (for example bones that control hair) with a Smart Bone dial.

So far, it looks like Smart Bones can reposition points in the actions, but I do not see how they can move bones.

How do you do that?

Thank you!

Hello. Maybe I'm not understanding the questions, but It works in the same way it does with points: you simply move/rotate/scale the bones you want in the Smart bone action.
Have you tried it?

Ah, yes, I was making an error. I had the shape layer selected and not the bone layer.

However, this has brought up another question.

Suppose I make a smart bone and in the smart bone action I move a bunch of points that happen to be bound to a regular bone to a different position. Now I want that bone to be in the relative new position so it will be able to control those points there. If I move the bone, it seems to pick up the points and move them with it. However I just want to place the bone in the new position without moving the points again.

For example, let's say I am working on a head and in the hair I have a bone to control a lock of the hair (by hand or with wind). Now let's say I create a smart bone to deal with the head turn and I move all the points in the hair to right. Now I want to place the bone that was controlling that lock of hair into the new position of the lock of hair. Am I able to do that without moving the points that are bound to it?

Do you understand what I am saying?

Thank you.

It the case of a head turn, you'd want to have a root bone (perhaps for each hair bone chain), to move by smart bone, leaving the rest of its chain free to control by hand, wind, etc.. Then you'd move the root bone first, in your turn smart bone action, and then tweak the points.
