I don't know anything about Linux, but that sounds like Moho might be having permission problems with accessing settings and/or registration files. I have no idea where those would be on anything but Windows.

Just a blind guess, mind you.

I'd love to see a Moho port to Linux too. My main OS these days is Debian-Testing on my workstation, and Mint on my laptops (although I still run a variety of other OSes, since I'm a geek :).

Lutris was a good hint. I installed and ran Moho a couple of times on a steam deck. The basics seem to work fine, also there is no lag while drawing or navigating. However using bitmap layers makes large black areas fringed by blocky artifacts, at least when using "multiply" blending mode. Maybe there is some setting in Lutris to mitigate this, but I haven't explored this yet.

Even if this works, there's still the issue with file manager integration. Not having preview thumbnails is a big deal IMO. So a native version would be highly appreciated.

A support executive pointed out to me a post on WineHQ where Moho 12 was able to function on Linux by installing Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2013 via Winetricks.

I've been trying it for Moho 13.5, and still having trouble, although I may be doing it wrong. If anyone else wants to test it, let me know.

In my last attempt once I installed that Visual C++ runtime, I didn't run into any errors with the application (aside from the one problem of not being able to get past registering my software). Most of my work is with the vector drawing tools, so your mileage may vary. I strongly recommend using either GEProton or Dawn Winery Proton for emulation. That seems to fix pretty much all of the graphical glitches that you run into with standard Wine.

Sorry to necro-post, but I have a small update! I was able to track down my serial number and the installer for Moho 12.5, and attempted an install using Lutris. It went off without a hitch! I didn't have to install any additional Visual C++ runtimes or anything like that. (Running under GE Proton.) I wish I could be running one of the more contemporary builds, but for now I'm just grateful to be back in the saddle without having to dual boot my OS!

Best of luck to everyone else out there in a similar bind. Happy animating and I hope things go well for you.

Regarding Moho 14.4, someone posted that this third party fix worked to let them activate the full version of Moho 14 on Linux:

https://github.com/gurppt/moho14-linux-proton

It's not been tested or supported in any official capacity, though, so use it at your own risk.

More exciting news! I tested the project Belgrath was so kind to send to us. Unfortunately I couldn't use the automated shell installer that is in that Github repository because I'm on a Fedora-based distro and don't have the Ubuntu/Debian apt command in bash. That being said, there are step-by-step instructions on how to manually configure your environment. Here are the steps that I followed just in case anyone else wants to get running:
  • First, download your Moho installer from Lostmarble's website.
  • In Lutris, use the "install Windows games from an executable" option to install Moho. Make sure you don't try and launch it when the installer is finished.
  • Copy mountvol.exe to C:/Windows/System32 and C:/Windows/SysWow64
  • Back out in Linux, copy the uuid file from /proc/sys/kernel/random/ to C:/Windows in your enviornment where you installed Moho. Make sure you rename it to mountvol-guid.txt
  • Launch Moho, and go through the registration steps as normal.
And with that, I'm up and running on the newest release of Moho 14. I know that the steps I've outlined aren't for the faint of heart, but to get up and running is a thrill and a half. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be up all night tinkering now that I can use it again....I've got to learn all the new features since 14.0 that I've missed.

I will test it under Linux Mint as soon as I can and report it here, thanks for the link Mate! :D

Works surprisingly well under Linux Mint 22.3, no glitch so far, thanks again for the link! :D
