I'm sorry but this has been kick my rectal region all over the place.
The effect I wanted to create was to have a woman's dress move around. Say if she was dancing, but the pattern being underneath and the dress being able to go anywhere on the screen. Did I make sense :?:
I just can't seem to get this :!: :x
Can someone idiot proof it for me as to what steps I would do PLS :!:

OK, you will need
- a dress layer as the mask
- maybe a second dress layer as the outline for the dress
- a layer with the pattern.

All these have to be in the same group or bone layer. It is a good idea to have a separate group just four this purpose. The setup is somehow like this:

bone layer
> dress layer as outline
> pattern layer
> dress layer as mask

The pattern layer needs to be layer bound to an extra root bone in the bone layer, otherwise it would move with the dress. I do the dress layer mask animation first, then duplicate that layer and set its fill to zero opacity to get the outline only.

Now the masking settings for each layer should be like this:

bone layer: hide all
> dress layer as outline: don't mask this layer
> pattern layer: mask this layer
> dress layer as mask: add to mask, but keep invisible

Ah, on second reading your post I noticed I've misunderstood a bit. You don't want the pattern to stand still but move on its own independently from the dress? No problem at all.

Just do 2 sets of bones in the bone layer, each of it starting with its own root bone. One would be for the dress, the other for the pattern then.

@ slowtiger: no you're exactly right about what I was trying to accomplish in your first example. However after looking at your second example. My question would be, "would it come out like the first exam. looks, but with me being able to still move them independently?

You could try that yourself, that's why I added the .anme file. Just move the bone in the upper right cormer which is the one the pattern layer is bound to, or add some more bones to it and use flexible binding.

I just did this in the same file: selected that upper bone and translated it while the dress movement remained he same. As you see those two layers can be moved totally independent from each other.

@realsnake: I suggest if you haven't done it already. Use slowtiger's example and file above and maybe that'll help you get the hang of it.
