render at half dimensions

Post by bingobongo »

I have an animation which I am exporting to a series of pngs. I would like to export it at half of its current size.

I tick the render at half dimensions but the output pngs are fuzzy/jaggy when compared to the full size export

If I change the project setting width and half to make it half the size then export at full size (without the half dimension ticked) then I still get a fuzzy/jaggy output.

Is there any way to half the size of my animation and still achieve a sharp output when exporting to png?

thank you

Uhm, of course you'll loose sharpness if you have an image in half size.

Get yourself Photoshop or Gimp, resize the image in there, and apply a sharpening filter afterwards.

ImageImageImage

Here are three sizes of images I exported directly from anime studio as ping files.
The sizes were set in >File< <Preferences> before exporting.
I don't see any change in clarity here. 160 x 120, 640 x 480, 320 x 240 .

What resolution is your original file before importing into AS?

thanks for the replies.

The image and animation is made completely inside AS which means that I would expect that if I change the project settings as per rplate then I should see no loss in quality.

I do get a fuzzy image after export when I compare it to its full size export.

I will post the two images as soon as I get chance

thanks again

If by saying the image and animation is made completely inside you are saying you are using only vector layers then, yes, you should not get any change in sharpness. So you *only* have vector layers for your drawings, correct?

Naturally if you bring in any bitmap images that's a whole different story. Perhaps you could post an image of your layer setup as well.

If it is half the size... it WILL be lower resolution... it will look fuzzy if you try to view it at the same size as the full resolution.

Make sure you are viewing it at 100%. That's my only guess.

thanks again for the replies. I think heyvern is correct - thank you

I set the project settings to 160 x 120 and export the animation but the resulting size is still 320 x 240 ? I thought the output size is taken from the project size or does that not make any difference ?

thanks

It should out put to what ever size is in the project settings. It could be there is a limit on how small you can go. 160 x 120 is very tiny.

A tip: if you need very small pictures, like thumbnails for a webpage, render the image in normal size and reduce them in Photoshop - the quality's much better then. Also don't forget about sharpening filters (but don't overdo that).

Thanks. The issue seems to be that I am rendering at 160 x 120 but the output is 320 x 240 so that's where the fuzziness comes in.

Don't know if there is a lower limit on output?

thank you for the help
