I know this is in the tutorials, and I have read and re-read it many times. However, I'm still baffled.
The tutorials imply that it should be easy, even automatic with the program itself recognising that a shape within a shape is a hole and acting accordingly. Not so, in my case. Is there some setting that eludes me?
All I am trying to do is cut a window in a wall so I can move the camera in through that window.
Perhaps I'm stupid, perhaps it's obvious, if so have mercy on the intellectually challenged and help me out here, please.
Try this. Start a new file, go to frame 0 if you are not already there.
1. Select the Add Point tool (looks like a hoop); uncheck the Auto Fill box if it is checked.
2. Draw a rough square. Weld first and last points with a space bar if Auto Weld box is unchecked.
3. Draw another box inside this one in the same way.
4. Now, switch to the Select points tool (dotted rectangle, top left).
5. Select all points.
6. Now, switch to the Create Shape tool (looks like a kidney bean).
7. Your shape should now be a red chequerboard shape with a 'window' in it.
8. Hit the space bar.
9. If you have the default settings, you should now see a white rectangle shape with a window inside, bordered in black.
Voila! You have just made a window. It's in the Help file tutorials...
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Indeed it was in the help file tutorials, however it was not nearly as concise as your explanation. I am ingratiated to you my friend for your swift response, patience and help.
Still frustated. I no the author of this thread finally figured out how to cut a hole in a shape from help from jahnocli but I still can't seem to pull this off. I feel like I'm going crazy. I've followed the manual and this example and still can't do it.
I'm providing a link to YouTube showing what I'm doing. Please can someone help and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Just do not create a shape when you draw the first rectangle. That first shape is sharing the outer rectangle and is giving the sensation of non hole. Alternatively you can delete the back shape by clicking in the hole with the delete shape tool.

Me too! I've been struggling with shapes since I'm working with AS5 (AS6 now). Also did the tutotrial several times but the fill and stroke behaviour of shapes always stayed unpredictable to me and in 50% of the cases it didn't do what I wanted.
The tutorial doesn't stress the points that Auto Fill should be turned off while drawing and the outer lines shouldn't be a shape before the holes are drawn, which seem crucial in the process.
The trick of creating the hole afterwards with the delete shape tool is also new to me and opens up new possibilities. It also works with partially overlapping objects. I think I'm finally beginning to understand how shapes and holes work in AS and how to handle them .

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who found the tutorial lacking on the point.
