hey thanks...I tried out your tutorial - works...I wonder if I wnt to really import 3d into moho or work with characters in moho and make the composite with background (3D) in max...hmm - if you know a place with good wings tutorials . let me know...:-) jakobPcpc

Except for the wings3d page itself, I've only found one other page that's been of help to me:

that may be of interest to you too. 7feet has written some incredible scripts to shade imported 3d objects. In order to use a model imported from wing3d, you must assign "materials" to the surfaces, not "textures". The details are in that thread.

Jorgy, thanks for the step-by-step tutorial. I tried Wings3D for the first time today and I just wanted to map a simple image to a side of a cube and couldn't figure it out. I couldn't find it in the manual at first glance, not in the tutorials, but your solution worked the first time! But is this really the normal way? It seems very intricate and needs a paint program to "fake" the content of the image file?
Is Wings3D considered a decent program? I use it because Moho needs .obj files but it doesn't feel like a solid piece of software at first glance. Anim8or works much better for me, is also free but no .obj export...
Anyway, thanks, I can experiment with 3D in Moho now!

Isn't it easier to simply do the 3D-object in Anim8or and export it to another format than OBJ, and then import that file to Wings3D and export to OBJ? Can't you simply use Wings3D as an converter?

I'm not sure, I haven't tried that. It's been a while since I last used anim8or, I don't know the export formats. It's worth a try, thanks!

I'm glad that I was able to help! Just wanting to return some of what I've received on this forum.
As far as this method for doing materials, I'm not sure if it's the best. It's the only way I know of to put an arbitrary picture on a 3d object. And is it robust? In my experience it has been, no crashes, etc. The only real gotcha is remembering to triangulate before importing into moho so that 7ft's script will work properly.

I use anim8or as i have just found out you can export to .obj and i find it easier to do.

Yep, anim8or can export .obj but I can't get the texture out... The texture is embedded in the .obj file (or is it?) but Moho doesn't see the texture map, only the shape. Converting in Wings3D doesn't seem to improve this...
