Greenlaw- so jealous you got to meet those guys and hear them talk about their process!
Greenlaw wrote: Tue Jun 30, 2020 6:11 pm They did show off a custom program that was really cool.
I could be wrong but I always understood it to be MOE and HouDoo custom developed for SPA into KLaS: http://lesfilmsdupoissonrouge.com/logiciels/?lang=en

If only those programs were available to play with!

Following the prompting of some people on Youtube I finally got around to finishing my tutorial/overview showing how this lighting method works.

I'm definitely no pro Youtuber.

This is a pretty complex setup, but hopefully you all can get some useful ideas out of it!

Let me know what you think.

Great lighting setup! The gradient and ambient fill controls are genius.

Wow, thanks for putting that together! Very impressive, yet very intimidating!

Thanks @alanthebox. Hopefully not too intimidating!

If you wanted to simplify this down I think the key ingredients are the base value layer, a single light source gradient and another ambient fill type gradient to fill in the shadows with a bit of bounce light. You wouldn't necessarily need the light shapes unless you want a more realistic sense of form & shadow and you wouldn't necessarily need the sub-surface scattering. I think a lot could be done with just a few of the ideas here, especially for more stylised work.

Unbelievably .. Google / YouTube had a multi-hour outage earlier - which may have been the cause of the 404 error.

Hey guys, I was looking at this, it's brief but is this similar to how Luke did it or is it different? it looks amazing... any thoughts on how it was achieved... I checked the rest of his channel but this is all he posted... maybe he (Saimon) posts here too?

Just x and y axis smart bones controlled by a target.

Thanks for the reply, would you mind explaining just a bit more?
Is it one shadow layer that the points or moved & that's all?
Is this a good way to shade a character?
Thanks!

I would guess that there's a separate shadow layer for the hair, face, and neck.
But yeah, just looks like smart bone controlled point motion to me.

The results speak for themselves, but there are simpler approaches, if that degree of detail is not needed.
