I normally work in a single view, but multiple views are handy when I need to be close to something but also see the 'big' picture at the same time. This is useful even when I'm working only in 2D.
For example, when a character is very small or far away in the camera view, I might also need to close to the control panel so I can animate it. Having multiple views of the scene allows this. (This is where synced refresh would be helpful.)
