i couldnt live without illustrator, but thats mostly because its so heavily integrated with photoshop, illustrator, flash, indesign, etc. all of which i used on a daily basis.

i cant speak on other software, as illustrator is all i've ever used. Does it make drawing easier? I would say the exact opposite - makes drawing harder, and take longer - but you have many more options once you are done, and many more options while editing.

Nothing is easier than drawing on paper and scanning, or using a wacom.

I'd say creating in Illustrator isn't so much drawing, it is more like constructing an image.

As for comics or characters, I don't recommend to start with a blank document in Illustrator, instead one should do sketches on paper, scan them in, and use Illustrator for cleanup and colouring.

Microsoft Word?

I didn't know it had drawing tools like Illustrator. I have a terrible time importing those Word drawing formats.
