Have undocked the layer and timeline panel quite a bit recently and it has been pretty fine, a tiny bit of freezing, but yeah I might give that a go, cheers.

You are probably advised to update to 13.5.4 - which includes multiple fixes for crashes / glitches, and new feature options:

13.5.4 - viewtopic.php?t=35029 (which is a quick update to the feature/fix release: 13.5.3 - viewtopic.php?t=34975)

Sadly, I've been crashing way more frequently as well, and like you, it usually occurs when performing a very mundane action (selecting a different tool, selecting a different layer, etc). I recently experimented with syncing my custom content folder on OneDrive, so, I wonder if that would be causing an issue. For me, disabling brushes in the viewport seems to reduce the likelihood of a crash.
turning off the brush works for me too, i wonder if its something wrong with the brush rendering that causes the crash
