In the Layer setting panel under vectors what is the Gap Filling checkbox for? I've only just noticed it and it does'nt appear to change anything when checked? Anyone?

It does... a little bit. It is only noticeable when rendering and only with specific situations.

Suppose you have two filled shapes that "share" the same edge. If you render with antialiasing with "gap filliing" off there will be a thin line between the shapes.

If you turn on gap filling... the line... uh... doesn't exactly go away completely but it is less noticeable.
