Getting AS Pro to recognize Inkscape SVG

Getting AS Pro to recognize Inkscape SVG

Installed a copy of Inkscape with the idea of taking some of my artwork, running it through trace bitmap, and then bringing the vectorized outline into AS to work with there.

However, if I go into AS Pro and try to use Import Adobe Illustrator, it doesn't recognize the Inkscape SVG file as being compatible.

Am I misunderstanding something (possibly several somethings)?

AS understands Illustrator or EPS files only. Try to save your file in one of those.

It will not help you much, though, because AS introduces a lot of extra points, which are hard to animate. The best method is usually to do your vector drawing in Anime Studio.

Of course, we have had this discussion many times in the past. Some people even insisted that Anime Studio (well, Moho) should be modified so the original artwork would be exactly the same as in "that vector drawing program". However, because AS uses a somewhat other vector drawing techniques than static vector drawing programs, it is hard to convert regular EPS and Adobe Illustrator files without mangling the original drawing somewhat.

Think Saturday morning cartoons, Mike Clifton (the creator of Anime Studio) used to say. IOW blobby, round characters, instead of character with many corners and details. Those are the easiest to import into AS, and the easiest to animate as well.

OK, I gather that I "do" want to create both my backgrounds and my characters as Vectors to make them easier to scale, etc. Is that correct, or should I do bitmap backgrounds and just worry about vectoring the characters?

I suppose I could bring a char in on an image layer, place a vector layer above that, and trace using my touchscreen, then drop the image layer.

Or am I worrying more about vectors than I should be and I should just use image layers for both as long as I "bone" the character image properly?

I would only use vectors if you need them. If you already created the background as a bitmap image, and it doesn't need scaling, I wouldn't bother to create a vector image.

There are also creative considerations to use a different technique for your background and your characters. I gladly leave that up to you.

You can always replace the background bitmap image with a vector drawing in a later stage.

For one of my projects i would like to use fully 3D rendered detailed backgrounds uisng Animation Master and then use ASP for the characters.

This is a technique that has been used forever in animation. Detailed painted backgrounds that "don't move" and then animate the characters over it.

This also allows for the option of compositing in another application to speed up the process. Rendering out of AS with the image background is much slower than rendering just the vector characters. Compositing the two in a dedicated video compositor renders the final much faster I've found.

AS isn't designed to be a compositing tool so that kind of rendering probably isn't optimized. It probably is loading that image for every frame while other programs would be able to cache the background layer that doesn't change and speed up the render times.
