I've seen videos where someone would make a character, and import it into ASP. But I'm wondering how exactly? Every time I use Illustrator, the import screws up the file.

The characters look kind of like they were externally made. Wait... He said he received png images

But anyhow, how would I set up characters and import them like this?

Hi Blade_Rain.

It explains very well in the manual how to create artwork in other programs and import into Anime Studio. Look in Tutorial 4 'Images' 4.1 to 4.4.

The images you mention above were created in Photoshop. If you are creating vector images in Illustrator well, personally I wouldn't bother, I would just create them directly in ASP. If you don't like the drawing tools in ASP then persevere with them because you soon will

Would this mean that the image would have to not have a background in order to be used?

Yeah, you'd need to crop it with a transparent background. I use Photoshop, but anything that can export transparencies should work.
