Read the last paragraph of the "Draw Tools" section under:
Using Anime Studio | Tool Groups | Draw Tools
This covers creating text on a vector layer.
-------
Another option I've found for small amounts of copy is to use the "Notes" layer type and in the layer options uncheck the box: Don't Render This Layer. Unchecking this allows the notes layer to show up in the render.
There are a few drawbacks to this. On screen that layer stays the same size relative to the zoom of your view. If you "reset" the view, that is the size the text will render.
Another problem is you can only have one line of copy in a note layer. So if you have a lot of copy you need a lot of notes layers.
------
You many find it much easier to just do the subtitles in post... after you rendered. Use another application that has more and better text options to put in the subtitles.
This has HUGE benefits. First off you don't have to rerender the whole thing from AS if only the subtitle changes. You just change it in the compositing application you used to add the subtitles.
It also saves in working time and file size of the AS project if you have a lot of vector layer text. Vector layer text makes huge files. Text creates a lot of points and it can slow down performance.

Use can select draw, text- and type 1 line at a time. However Anime doesn't convert fonts so well, so you'll get an "e" and an "o" here and there with a sharp edge on it... I've used this before being lazy, but for clean text do as heyvern suggested and add in post.

I use to try using the text layer thingy in AS in the past for labeling bones. You get a lot of text in there... and yikes! Performance goes way down.
The text option in AS is more for simple short words. Anything really long should probably be done as an image layer or in post.
I forgot to mention another option! Use image layers! You could put all the subtitles as separate png images in a switch layer and easily animate their appearence during the animation. Hopefully you aren't doing a really long animation as one project file... otherwise this could get very complicated.
This could work nicely although you will still have to render the animation again if the subtitles change.
