I just recently bought this program, so I've been trying to get acquainted with its basics. Here is my problem, whenever I try to create an animation lasting over 3 seconds (70 something frames), the program won't let me play through it. It will just keep cycling the first 3 seconds. Someone please cure my ignorance. Many thanks.

The default length of a new file is 72 frames. Go into project setting and change the end frame of the animation.

There are key commands to do this in the time line but I'll let you look that up in the help. Don't have time to do that "mac to pc" command key thing in my head.
