Easier way: proportional scaling of levels. If I make a character jump, I create a keyframe on its top layer 1 frame before the impact, copy that key to some 6 frames later or less, then I create a key right at the impact and use the layer scale tool (2) with pressed alt key. It helps when you place your top layer origin at the height of his feet (0).

sweet thanks! that worked. but how do i expand?
for example, if i want to squash a circular object vertically, obviously the object will expand horizontally a bit as a result of being vertically squashed.
i hope that made sense.

i guess this is a good example. at the point of impact, the vertical is squased for horizontal.
