Hey guys, i was looking about this forum and i've seen people use the term Slave and Master Bones.
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what they are and perhaps what the logical thing to use them for is?
Im not too good with bones so im trying to learn all i can. Or if this has already been discussed, or if there is a tutorial out there somewhere could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks alot.

The concept means that one bone can be controlled by another.
To achieve this, the Master bone needs to be named. By default bones get numbered when created, you should replace the numbers with names. The bone name is in top left of the project window when you select a bone.
In the "Bone Constraints" popup you'll find 3 ways to have the actual selected bone be controlled by another in the same level. Choose a bone name, then an amount. Numbers can be fractures and negative.
Note that a controlled bone is immune to your manipulations - you can have only one way to move it: by your mouse, or by another bone. Experiment.

I thought that 'master' and 'slave bones' were used more talking about Vern's script. You can always search the forum or check out Vern's sticky script thread.
But if you are still learning the basics, I'd avoid it for now.

Just to be clear. If you have "Auto name bones and shapes" turned on in the preferences all the bones and shapes get named based on the internal application ID number for those objects. This check box in the preferences is turned off by default. When it's off bones and shapes are not named at all.
With "auto name" turned on a bone will get named with a number automatically. the only reason to change that number name for using constraints is for easier reference. It's easier to remember "left elbow fan bone" than "16". You can still use the number names.
I highly recommend turning on "auto name bones and shapes". It can make life easier down the road. Especially when you need to select shapes that have no name and are buried under 10 other shapes.

Is there a Master/Slave script for bones on different layers? I did a search and came up with far too many results.

Yes there is Slice. Check out Vern's 'sticky' thread in the scripts section.
