Image or Vectors?

I've been messing around with anime studio a bit, and I was wondering what the main currency of Anime Studio is.

If it is the vector, then how to you add colors and gradients to the vector where you want it?

If it is the image, how to you enforce full control over it? Like you can with a vector layer.

I like using the vectors since the vector gives control over the various points making up the shape or polygon. Using an image seems to concede control, only being able to warp it using bones. While I try to use vectors, I'm not able to have full color control, thus, the vector seems very one dimensional. The shading is nice, but there must be some way to get more control. Skinning the vector perhaps?

Vectors are THE main feature and benefit of AS. I am not sure what you mean by not having control over the color and effects. If you want more control over shading you could try drawing that shading yourself if the shading effects don't work the way you want.

All the characters in this image were done with AS using vector shapes and fill effects only, no image layers. And they can be animated (the compositing and drop shadow was done in Photoshop):

In my humble opinion the only thing that limits what can be done with AS is your imagination and desire to make it work.

Some people don't like the vectors in AS and might argue my opinion. Some people like using images and think AS is only good for "puppet" type animation because of the lack of support for SWF export. I guess it all depends on how you use it and what style appeals to you.

My advice would be to keep working with vectors and learn how to use them effectively.

Take you time and read the manual. Then if you can afford it buy, 'The official guide' book. Learn how things are done in the program. It's like no other, so this takes time. Don't discount the image, warping images or vector in your animation. AS handles both extremely well once you know how to get it to do what you want. Use what works for you.

nicely done charactors heyvern. its true charactor designing is made easy in AS. i haven't figured out how to upload a picture in the forum so i uploaded it to this link. all the props and charactors were done in AS, the lighting was done in photo impact. :P [/img]

Hi heyVern,

I was wondering you have any tutorials on how to do characters like that in AS PRO. I'm trying to get the hang of the interface.
