very basic question: I want to get rid of an animation that I don't need anymore. How do I delete a (point motion) keyframe in the timeline? the obvious methods don't work (del, backspace, right-click-menue...)

Select the key (the dot in the time line). It turns red. Now press the "delete" button on the time line. You can't use the delete key to remove key frames. You must select the key and use the delete button.
