I discovered Proteus tonight at the local video rental store.

I had never heard of it . . . which amazes me, considering what an extraordinary achievement this is.
We watched it with a swiftly growing sense of wonder.
I am somewhat at a loss for words, which is very unlike me.
I suppose that when I contemplate the abject failure of storytelling across the film industry, it would take a truly radical example of passion and artistry to redeem that cynical craft.
Proteus *is* that miracle.

Digital animators in particular will be rather horrified to learn how the film was made just before the advent of digital animation.

Thx for the tip. I should look out for it. The images only show what I already know: Haeckel's photographs and drawings, and Doré's woodcuts. I'm quite curious about how this works in motion.

You should take a look at his other film about the Maya hieroglyph's deciphering. I just saw it on TV and was amazed about the motion graphic parts. Archaeology is one of my old interests, it was great to see the drawings and foggy photographs cleaned up and explained - wonderfully done. Digitally now, of course. I really like to see more scientific films with a classy production like this.
