Not the animated layer visibility the "eyeball" icon thingy in the layer palette. We need this for scripting. If a layer is "touched" by a script it "turns it back on". If it was hidden it becomes visible. Need to access this boolean so we can ignore layers that are turned off or hidden.

Yes please, I have a couple of great scripts waiting to be written which would use layer visibility.

Even just making the 'eyeball' checkbox act as a toggle when the layer is selected would work. IOW, if that visibilty is turned off, the layer would show while selected, but immediately disappear when unselected. This seems like a more logical behavior to me.

I would prefer that it "stay off" until intentionally turned back on. I often work by turning off layers while I edit them. It is like having wireframe view without having to set that up for each layer or in the display settings. I turn off the layer while it is selected so I can see the points without all the fill shapes in the way but I don't have to change any display settings.

What is annoying is having to constantly hide a layer if I select another one and go back to it. If I hide a dang layer, I want it to stay hidden for cripes sake. I don't want anyone but ME to unhide it dagnabbit!

Agreed , if a layer is off it should stay off. Those dashed darn eyes.

That would work as well. Just keep them from doing anything 'automatically'. They're just off until that checkbox is clicked. That would help while editing (my windows layout hides the display settings so it'd definitely help to be able to edit a 'hidden' layer.
