Im trying to create a flashlight type of effect by making the screen black at all times but having a hidden layer that is being shielded by this black. I want to scroll say a circle across and have the background hidden by the black show up where the circle is. Anyone know of any way to accomplish this?

Isn't this one of the tutorials that comes with AS?

Yeah, but I think he wants it backward, all black with the spotlight being lit.

I made a little modification by making a front layer that is all black with a hole in it and animating the hole in that layer instead!

Personally I would put a bit of transparency on the black layer and some softness to the light rim. I tried it with some softedge on the contour lines of the rim, but it adds up with the black layer transparency, which makes a darker ring around the light rim.

(Me think I was getting the hang of AS after all!)

Coincidentially I just did that spotlight trick for my ongoing project.

I had several groups, each of them stacked and with mask settings like this:

Group layer (hide all)
- dark - a big black rectangle with a round hole in it (mask this layer, blur 30, opacity 60%)
- dancers (mov files with transparency, add to mask)
- BG walls (image files with transparency, add to mask)

The nice part is that AS recognises alpha channels from movies and images so you can use their visible areas as mask, too.

See the effect here: http://www.slowtiger.de/examples/saal.html (5.2 MB)

I appreciate the responses guys. Im really new to animating as a whole not only anime studio. GCharb do I need the pro version to open that file or just the 5.6 update? Slow tiger that actually gave me an even better idea of doing the flashlight effect by brightening everything up instead of total blackness with a circle moving around showing layers underneath. Im trying to start simple though. I bought the official book so Ill be reading up. Thanks for the help

Hello Cobra

AS Pro 5.6 here

Rendered the file, which is a black colored layer with 175% opacity, the layer has a hole in it and is used as a mask, added some softedges on it so it looks smooth.
