I am considering the profession of anime. Are there any schools or universities in the USA that teach anime? Are there any correspondence courses on anime that you know of?

Well, if you search for animation classes instead of anime, you will find quite a lot of places to study this.

I agree with slowtiger that if your serious about making a career out of it, you should enrol yourself in a drawing/animation course at your local university or art school.

That will give you a solid foundation in life-drawing, perspective, value, expression, timing, etc, that is necessary for doing all types of animation.

You can then supplement this study with the truly excellent "How to Draw Manga" series of books, that will help you understand the unique features of Manga and Anime.

Also, most Animes produced in Japan today are made using the software suite Retas, so you could learn a lot about modern production techiques simply by playing around with the demo version and reading through the manuals.

There's also a website www.howtodrawmanga.com, which I'm pretty sure is unrelated to the above series of books, which offers a 6 week online course for $50:

Sure most of this is about Manga not Anime, but, as any animator will tell you, you have to be able to draw well before you can animate.

If you are really serious, and efficient enough with the language you could always come and study here, I guess.
