Splatter Effect

How to get a nice splatter effect? Is there a way to produce a series of droplets to the point of impact and spread? I confess, in this case it is indeed blood but it could be ketchup or mud or...

I tried particles which do the generation bit fine but, how to 'freeze' the result?
Actions?
Point by point? -- this is what I have done for now.

Replacement.

You may use particles for the spray, but set it invisible the moment they hit the ground. Instead set a final splatter layer to visible.

Thanks Slowtiger.

All it took was a bit of encouragement in a partic-ular (particle) direction. [terrible pun :~]

I had tried particles but hadn't tested it through enough to see that the result is consistent by frame

Run particles to frame 'x' > take a screen shot > draw duplicate location of the splats over the screen shot > switch between particles and final splats. The spread - in my case, the soak into the cloth screen could be done with the vector layer.

As ever, I am regularly surprised by this program.

*edit*
Just had a quick play with this and see that there is a lot about particle setting that I need to learn.
