How import 3rd party vendor's 3D background from Max 7

I'm just doing cut out animation in AS. But I'd really like to use a 3rd party's 3D scene as my background.

I assume I could scroll around the scene, change angles etc., and just have my cut out characters face the camera.

I don't want to buy the 3D scene unless I could use it in AS Pro. The vendor is selling it in Max 7 format.

I don't have Max or any other 3D software. I see that AS Pro can import .OBJ files.

Is there public domain software, or cheap, which can read Max and export to .OBJ?

What options do I have?

There are a few universal 3d object converters.

But before you buy. Import some obj files into AS. Because AS has only one light source, 3D objects don't look that good. I rather use a free ware 3D program and import images.

Bake the lighting as a texture and the obj will have the light source you want but no bump transparency, displacement, glows spec, sss fresnel, toon or any other shaders or effects you are after.
It still may be useful though.

So you could start with a 3D scene outside of AS, and fly the camera in,
have a few different views. Then export a .mov or other clip, and some .jpeg stills and animate in AS over that? That is what I'm thinking about doing.

What free ware 3D would you recommend that could read Max 7 ?
I'm not looking for a big 3D feature set and would most value a short learning curve just to accomplish the above.
