I am working on a series and I have a whole bunch of parts that I want to put in sequence. Is there an easy FREE program that i can download that will help me turn several .avi files into one big .avi file?

Try VideoPad Video Editor.
It's free and very easy to use.

If you have AS pro and don't care about maximum quality. Import them back into AS and render again.

This may sound obvious, but depending what Windows OS you're using Windows Movie maker can do the trick, but perhaps not with the same quality control as virtualdub.

I just tried windows movie maker to join
files, no problem.
you just pick a bunch of movies to edit,
bring them into the program and
drag them down into the edit frame box.

so heres what happens... in wmm it lets me import the files, but when i put them on the timeline they only go to the audio section (yet they do not appear to have audio, OR video for that matter.)
I did some tutorials for virtual dub, I got it to ALMOST work, everything is fine until it switches from the first scene to the second scene, the audio starts too early and then the video is no longer synced together.

I used AS and WMM daily. On my OLD windows XP.
Now windows 7
Boo hoo hoo
No WMM except a really bad version you can download.
Anybody got a good substitute?
Enough about me.
on to your problem.
Finish your AS file, choose
>Export Animation >AVI movie
In WMM CLICK on the video layer at the bottom
At the top left choose IMPORT VIDEO
Make sure you are actually importing a video clip, and not the AS file.
Click on the icon and drag it down to the video layer.
That's all.
