What happened to animated layer opacity?

I read the posts on the changes to the timeline, yet I can't get the opacity to change over time. Is this disabled by default for some reason?
Double click the layer. There is a check box to turn on animated layer properties. If you open an older file that has animated layer property keys that check box is on by default for any layer with key in those layer properties. New layers created it is off.
