Help - no audio playback in Leopard

I just got Anime Studio 6 for OS X Leopard, and I was trying to do tutorials 5.1 and 5.2, but as soon as I imported the sound file, the playback in the timeline started freezing right at the beginning of the sound file. I would hit play and it would jump from frame 0 to frame 1 and stop.

I went through the rest of the steps in these two tutorials and exported, and the .mov files came out fine with sound and lip-synching. I could also see that the lip-synching had worked when I dragged the red "current frame" indicator along the timeline. This is just a problem with playback. All other sound on my laptop works normally. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

i am having this problem to with snow leopard - have you managed to find out if there is a fix?
