Rendering & Codecs OR buying a video editor

I LOVE this program when I can get the quality I want. I tried uploading stuff to YouTube and it looks horrible. I'm embarrassed and frustrated. So I came here and feverishly searched the forum to try and solve my lips not synching issue.
When I render with .mov and animation codec I can get a good lip sync some of the time. Mostly I get audio that plays ahead of the animation. thinking it was a 64 bit problem I played the video at full screen to fully engage laptop's resources. I tried the logarith codec I read about on the forum too. Neither worked.

Does anyone else have a problem with rendering AS 5.6 on a 64bit system?

I tried exporting pix but windows movie maker can only do .125th of a second for each jpg (about 15fps). It also doesn't do HD.

If it's a codec issue then I don't think QuickTime Pro will help unless I can import individual frames...
but then i might as well get an actual video editor, right?

What to do? what to do.....

What I've learned this forum that if you are doing anything more than small animations, you'd benefit greatly from a video editor. There are some very low cost ones, and probably some free ones.

Also, some editors perform compositing, which is like editing with effects.

I've also learned a lot on the forum at www.kelleytoons.com.

Ask yourself how much time your spending animating. There are tools for $50 that will save you lots of time. I'm a hobbyist so price matters.
Have fun.

I agree re: video editor.

I used to use iMovie which was ok, then slowtiger suggested Final Cut Express which wasn't too expensive (FCE 4 HD = $200) and I love it. Makes likfe WAY easier for me.

On Windows I'm not sure what's good...perhaps Sony Vegas or something?

But for YouTube you can get really good quality when you export with the H.264 codec or MPEG4 Quicktime or something, @ medium quality or set the bitrate to 2000 kb/sec perhaps, and then @ 480 x 360 size which works well with YouTube. Then for the audio, AAC codec, stereo, @ 41 KHz I seem to remember.

For 16:9 widescreen I'm not sure what'd work well size-wise. But I know that the 480 x 360 movies I uploaded worked pretty well.

Absolutely. Vegas Pro is a cool video editor. HOWEVER, they have a "Home Studio" version of it which is about 90% as functional and about 10% the price. In many ways it's much easier and faster to use because it's much more intuitive.

Thanks a lot for your help everyone. I have written and illustrated two children's books that I am attempting to animate now. So this is a hobby/investment for me.

I downloaded the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum to see how it handles jpg imports, audio time stretching, and HD. I was leaning toward After Effects since I have Photoshop and Illustrator and wanted to keep it all in the family. But $85US is better than $$$$$.

rogermate - thanks for the info on the alternate forum. The more info the better for me.

Mikdog - HappyLand was cool and ultra 2D but the Goldfish is alive and shaded and awesome. Can't wait to see more. When I get the hang of this stuff I'll post some.

Danimal - you were right about the cost. Thanks for the heads up.
