I saw a very nicely drawn free online tutorial for newbie animators. It isn't computer animation, but it might sharpen your skills.

A link to this page is also to be found at http://www.lostmarble.com/links.shtml. But it's a good link, so that dosn't matter.

I saw that link. And I also saw something else, a link to Preston Blair's Cartoon Animation Tutorial. It is a pitty the site is temporarily offline for an upgrade to 3D animation:
SORRY, THIS SITE IS
TEMPORARILY CLOSED

A NEWER TUTORIAL IS
IS NOW ON PROJECT,
WITH MODERN FEATURES
(FLASH, 3D, COMPOSITING...)
IMO this means no more 2D animation from FreeTones. Perhaps because most (would-be) animators are doing 3D now.

Does this mean that Disney Studios are right in claiming that 3D is the way to go? Is 2D animation nowadays only suitable for a small nice in the market (e.g. mobile phones)?

Not at all. 2D may have a limited future in feature film animation, but it is far from dead. Much 2D animation is quicker and cheaper to produce - isn't most animation on TV still 2D? If you take a look at the current issue of Animation Magazine (which, by the way, has a review of Moho this month), you'll see tons of 2D animation work, none of it on cell phones.
