Now that I have Windows 7

Post by super8mm »

Yes windows 7 does a better job at spreading the work load between cores but AS still doesn't use more than 50% of the CPU's power when rendering.

Hmmm.... I could maybe render one clip on two opened AS rendering both at the same time one doing the first half the other the last part? It would maybe then utilize it to the max but then I would lose time by merging the clips together. It would be nice if I could have one instance of AS push the CPU harder.

Any thoughts?
Any suggestions?

The render time are the same or are doubled?

So there are no problems, I guess...
If the render process will not be slower than usual, then maybe Windows 7 are well built and uses PC's resources better than older Os...
Or the System meter are wrong! :P

I think the original poster was essentially talking about multi CPU architectures being very common now and that AS is essentially a single threaded app. Even the "pro" version.

All rendering would be much quicker if each cpu (which in today's PCs often means a dual or quad core) was working at its maximum. The theoretical speedup is if 1/2 a the render time for a dual cpu, and 1/4 the time on a quad core. In practise the actual speed up would be something less than that. There are a number of people with 8 cpus - two quad cores. I think Intel / AMD have plans on the table for 8 core cpus. At this point, it is easy to through more transistors on some silicon than it is to get them to operate at faster clock rates.

Long story short, if AS was rewritten/ recompiled to take advantage of multi - threading we'd see dramatic speed increases.

I've just installed Win 7 and... Anime Studio works 3 times faster!

Maybe you could have one thread rendering even numbered frames and the other rendering odd numbered frames, both saving the frames to one directory.

I would be interested in knowing how much faster AS would be on a quad core machine. I am thinking of upgrading to a new computer. Render time is one area where I think AS needs improvement. It takes as long as my 3D app in some cases.
