Hi

I am trying to fade images in and out using the opacity setting in the layer settings options, but each time I try to change the opacity by opening the layer settings at a particular position in the timeline, the opacity settings for this layer are changed for the entire timeline and not just for this frame. So no keyframes are added.

I would be grateful for some help to get this working correctly

Be sure that you have checked "Allow animated layer effects" in the preferences of that particular layer. It is off by default.
