I don't know if this is in the right forum but i don't know what to do for my backgrounds in my animation i'm working on.

I want a kind of realistic background but i dont have enough artist in me to do it.
I also was thinking about a mikdog style but i dont want to copy and i dont really know how to do that style.

I usually make very simple backgrounds but i don't want to anymore.

Anyways, what do you guys think i should do.
maybe you could post some examples of something i might be able to do.

(i do not have any advanced programs to create stuff with, just free programs like GIMP.)

Copy is not bad. Use real world.
Pick up a cheap tablet, Gimp and start drawing.
Don't judge your work immediately. After a few days you think it is better.

If this is for your Mister Man cartoon, (which is great, btw!), I wouldn't think you'd want to go too realistic. But I guess it depends on what you mean by realistic. Do you want them to have perspective/foreshortening? Do you want them to be more detailed? Do you want them to set the mood for your animation? This site has a lot of examples: http://animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com/ But if you have a particular style in mind, it might be best to watch animation of that style and take note of the way they do their backgrounds. That should at least give you a starting point. From there you can make it your own.

AS is a great tool for making backgrounds, check mine, they are realistic and cartoon, you can copy the style if you want, all of them made with AS, i hope you like them !

Thanks, yes i used textures on all of them, all textures were created in AS.

BTW lwaxana, thanks for the comment on mister man.

Although this animation needs more realism in the backgrounds but yeah.

Artrage is a very good application, and is very cheap! I have 2.5 version. You can easily purchase it! Try to store your money...
Make more attention on light and shadow, It's one of the most important things when drawing!

I used the airbrush in gimp to make some pretty good backgrounds.

Here is the same scene i have been working on, but in gimp.



There is an extra grass layer at the bottom of the image but i saved it separately so that my characters can be behind the top layer of grass to make a cool effect.
