The 2.6 Masking tutorial

Beginner using AS 6 Debut- coming from Flash Mx
from the manual - the final step - add the wall layer to the mask
it does nothing more and isnt needed. (---???)
I know it's supposed to confine the masking to the wall region - but that is already happening before making that masking adjustment to the wall layer. When I render it does anyway.
I read the post Masking Explained - which makes perfect sense coming from flash - the whole black/and white thing is redundant as it only applies to pshopheads.
I duplicated the sample file and deleted the Masking Group - replaced it with a bone layer and it works exactly as the guy of the post said.
I created file from ground up to imitate the sample file
Bottom layer - a background
2nd from Bottom layer - wall shape
3rd from bottom layer - circle (for spotlight 1)
4th from Bottom layer - - circle (for spotlight 2)
Top layer - a Bone layer - dumped layers 2,3 and 4 into the bone layer...
it worked perfectly - but no need to Add to the mask for the 2nd Wall layer.
I am presuming the addition of a gradient (thats a fill to alpha (same as flash)- NOT a fill of one color to another) png for mask will also work perfectly as per the poster's instructions and will try tonight.
From my results last nite I am tending to think that it's the relationship of the layers that is crucial - the bottom background layer and the lowest layer of the Mask/Bone group layer.
emulating the Mask/masked relationship in flash?
