I pretty new at this and I have what may seem like a simple problem. I made a short animation and during the animation I made my character blink. Basic animation-- adds character-- for the life of me I can't remember how I did it and I can't reproduce it. When I add the keyframe it the timeline doesn't recognize it. Please help

You could make 2 layers, eyes open, eyes closed and put them in a switch layer. What I do is randomly scrub through the time line and make the eyes closed for 3 frames then I switch back to open. It's usually the very last thing I animate.

Definitely actions are the way to go with blinks.
Create a new action on your bone layer and select your eye blinking layer
Keyframe at frame 1 and 3
At keyframe 2 - translate the points of your eye so that the eye is closed in a blink.
Because you keyframed 3, the eye will automatically pop back open.
Then you can kinda play with your keys, dragging them to suit your blink time.
Then, you can just add the action when you want a blink! Easy peasy!

Yes with actions but I wasn't sure if they had Pro or debut.
