Reflections?

Hopefully this will make sense.

It appears the simple way to do a relexion is to duplicate the layer in question, invert it and then change the opacity. (if it isn't do tell).

However, if say a character is stood behind a solid object which is also reflected you can see the character in the reflection. How can you stop this. Sorry to be a pain but if this is to do with masking, can you please explain it as if I was an 8 year old.

Correction can you explain as if I was an 8 year old. No offence to the young uns.

You can use masking.
I'm not an expert using it, but I'm pretty sure it can solve your problem.
Try to search about it in the user guide, maybe you are smarter than me and understand the usage in one shot!

Could you put the reflected (duplicated) character group behind the solid (duplicated) object group, thereby making the character appear behind the reflected object?

I did what you did and had an inverted image with reduced opacity as the reflection. I solved the problem with an object behind another by making the opacity of the reflected object 100% from the frame that the object disappears behind the other object until it appears again at which point I put the opacity back to whatever I used for reflection (75% for example.). Otherwise you see a mix of the two objects because their opacity is only partial. See my Happy Holiday Scene as an example

Thanks Garden guy. I haven't been able to see your file but I understand what your saying from your example. The problem I was having was the character was behind a door. So different parts of the character and background would be seen as the door was opening. This would happen over several keyframes.
