It's been a long while since I used Anime Studio Pro, currently I have version 6 and am considering upgrding to 7, although I haven't quite made up my mind.

I don't use it as much as I had thought I would, so am not intamtely familiar with everything it does or is capable of. I've taken on a small personal project involving sprite animations, which I imagine are easily created with switch layers (although the reality of it is it's a bit more complicated than that based on the sheer number of switch layers I'd need to create and use).

One of the things that would help me tremendously is importing an animated gif, and have it either palayable and controllable as an animated gif, or if it could aotumagically create the required switch/image layers upon import.

As either of these capabilities possible in either ASP 6 or 7?

AS only recognizes the first image of an animated GIF.

But you can use Quicktime clips for the same purpose. I do that all the time. Make sure to use the PNG codec and millions+ colours if you need transparency.

Alternatively a sequence of PNGs can be put into a switch layer, so you have control over playback in AS. Just grab the whole bunch of files and drag them over the layer palette.

What I have done in the past is make the animated GIF with my photo editor then used my screen capture program to make an AVI movie out of it then import to AS.

The quality isn't as bad as you would think. For example I use GIMP to make water as animated GIF at 1280x720 at around 60 layers then capture that at best quality with Snagit.

This is an example at only 24 layers, at 60 layers its real smooth. This was made with GIMP as animated GIF 1280x720 and captured via Snagit as AVI.
