Problems with Depth Sort

Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this.
The problem is actually rather simple, but I cannot seem to find a solution.
I have a male character that wears a hanging "reggae" style Jamaican hat.
Wanting his face, dreads, and hat to be controlled all together, I put them all in one main layer group. The problem is that since the hat is big and low it shows on top of the neck and chest layers underneath.
My solution to this was to use "depth sort" on the main layer so that the hat will always stack to the bottom and move the hat back behind the rest of the body.
It works.
BUT, only if I dont move the camera. As soon as I move the camera the layer depth stacking flickers, mismatching depth order for all the layers. The chest and neck suddenly pop out, then back in depending on my view angle. The only "fix" to that is to translate (move) the layers further and further away, to the point where the character breaks apart.
My question is;
Is there a way to make the AS7 camera respect absolute depth sort / layer stacking order as the camera pans/tilts without having to move the pieces of the character so far away as to break the character?
Again, thanks for taking the time to review my problem.
