Tried frame by frame animation

I have not tried frame by frame animation before so I thought I would try it.
I was wondering how some of you approach frame by frame in AS.
I tried to use one layer and manipulate the points but ran into problems if I had to add a point or delete one. So I ended up drawing the 1st frame and duplicated it 11x and tweaked all 12 frames at frame 0 then used switch layers on 1-3-5-etc.
I also have problems with the feet slipping but I found a tutorial by Mike Kelly that showed him placing a small circle at the heels of the feet and then uses translate bone to move the character laterally. This seems to work but is very slow. Is there a faster way to make a walk cycle without having the feet slip?
Thanks
Stephen
