A hook drop off

I am trying to figure out how to rig two bone structures together to make a, mildly, realistic hook drop.

For the example of what I am doing, I am trying to get a rigged character to be picked up from a hook, raised, and then moved to another part of the screen, dropped off, and the hook leaving the frame.

I have tried a few methods but can't seem to figure it out entirely, as I only have a few days experience with the program.

I used the cloth tutorial by guyver93 for the physics of the hook's rope and hook itself and that is working wonderfully, but I don't know how to connect the hook to the character model and drag it along with the same physics the rope is using.

Would anyone by chance have any idea? Thank you very much for any input!

the most straight forward way is by use of magic.

Put the hook into a switch layer, and make a duplication of it which includes the character attached. then, when you reach the actual character, hide him and switch over to the attached hook/character layer. you could rig that character on the switch layer to have its own rag doll physics as well if you wanted, then when you place it down again switch back and make the original character layer visible again (obviously in its new position)

Thank you very much for this!

It took a lot of effort, but I finally got it pulled off - this is quite a challenging program to get a hang of though I can definitely see how it can pay off once you do get used to it.
