Joining limbs (solved)

Does anyone have any good tips for joining limbs naturally to the body?

When I move my rigged character's leg for example, the top of the leg appears under the torso. I tried created an "ass" which matched the colour of the legs and removed the stroke. But it still looks a bit naff.

Cheers.

EDIT: It's a very basic skeleton. Spine bone joined to leg bone. Do I need an ass bone? Hmmm that sounds wrong lol.

I think I've figured out my problem. I had each leg on its own layer. I've put them on the same layer and one shape with a crotch. It looks a lot better now.

But any tips would still be appreciated. :D

...

Hang on, new problem The shape is distorting and inverting on itself! >_<

Back to the drawing board...

You should have the limbs on their own layers, simpler that way, and it allows layer animation.

You may have a hierarchy problem, you may need to use the reparent tool (P) and see if the arrows point from the right limbs and in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply GCharb.

I do have them on separate layers (at first and currently). I'm not sure you've understood my problem.

When I move my rigged leg the stroke at the top of it (that hides behind the torso) appears when I lift the leg too high. It's not a case of lifting it unrealistically high because the problem occurs when his thigh is horizontal for example.

Here's a picture -

I was hoping to get tips and tricks on how to draw a leg so it hides better behind the torso.

Why not have the top of the thigh be rounded instead of straight across like it is now? Then it would look like his bum when the leg is lifted.

That corner of the thigh that is moving outside the body. Bind the corner point to the bone in the lower body. You might have to add a point to the left side of the thigh a tad down the line to make his ''butt.''

You are awesome!

That's done it. Thank you very much. And thanks to GCharb and jonbo too.

Btw jonbo, that is what it originally looked like, it didn't work, he just had a large wiggly bum whenever I manipulated the leg bones lol. Cheers anyway.

Another BTW. I'm former member LeeHasPencil. But I doubt anyone remember me.

Oh, I thought you were using layer binding which works with my example. BTW , I remember your old user name why did you change?

I haven't figured out layer binding yet. The button doesn't seem to have an affect on anything lol.

I changed my username because I just wanted a fresh start. The Youtube account and other sites have been deleted so it became kinda redundant. Plus I've been using Leevil longer on the internet. Bit of a brand name lol.

Yes, make the top of the thigh a half circle, you may also need to place your bone at the center of rotation, so it does not wander away too much.

Made you a little sample file to illustrate what I mean.

Layer binding is easy, you create your layers with all you limbs, then you put your bones on a bone layer.

You select the first vector layer you want to bind to a bone, you select the bind layer tool, then you select the bone you wish to bind to that layer.

Then, with the bind layer tool still selected, you select the second vector layer you want to bind, then you select the bone you want it to be bind to.

You repeat the process till you are done!

GCharb, you are a beautiful person. Thank you for creating that file for me. And for the layer binding explanation. Damn, I missed this forum. :D

What these guys are saying is also a great way to do it, I, myself like the stretchy spandex type leg movements with binding the top points of the leg to the body bone. I do it with the wrist and feet also. For elbows and knees I use Mandcons rig.
