This link will demonstrate a test stereo rendering using AS8 Pro. All objects are on the same layer. Note that the further from the centre the object is, the greater the parallax between the left and right eye images. Worse is the fact that the parallax is in both x and y directions.

Can I be assured that the "improved stereo rendering" of AS9 won't produce the same result ? I don't want to waste my money upgrading to the latest version.

Just did a test in AS9 Pro and it's the same.

EDIT: And by 'same' I mean that it unfortunately still renders that way.
